The firm

A practice of one lawyer, arranged on purpose.

What this office believes about the law, how a matter actually proceeds here, and who stands behind the work when a file needs more than one pair of hands.

Our philosophy

The law is a method of reasoning before it is a set of rules.

Eight centuries of common law have produced something no statute could: a way of thinking about disputes in which every decision is answerable to the ones before it. It carries the logical discipline of the civil law, and it keeps alongside that discipline the conscience of equity, so that where a rule would work an injustice there is a remedy the rule itself cannot supply. A lawyer who understands both halves is not merely applying the law. He is taking part in it.

Most of the work is quiet. A company is formed, an instrument is drafted, an estate is settled and no one outside the family ever hears of it. Yet the body of law that arranges those ordinary affairs is the same one a person reaches for when an arrangement fails, and it remains the only instrument a private citizen can set against a party with more money, more time and more patience than they have. Used properly it restores a balance that had been lost. That is not sentiment; it is the daily function of the courts.

Tradition is kept here for a practical reason rather than a sentimental one. A form of words that has been litigated for a century is safer than a clever one drafted last year, because its edges are known. Innovation is welcome where it removes friction, and resisted where it merely removes scrutiny. What this firm offers is not scale. It is continuity, and the judgment that only continuity produces.

How we practice

How a matter proceeds here.

I

Intake and conflicts

Every matter is opened under a practice area code and screened against the register before advice is given.

II

The written plan

What we propose to do, in what order, and what it will cost. Nothing proceeds on an understanding.

III

The work itself

Drafted, reviewed and signed by the attorney on the file. No matter is delegated out of this office.

IV

The record

Every instrument, letter and statement is deposited to your portal and kept there for as long as you are a client of the firm.

Our network

One lawyer on the file, and a bench behind him.

A practice of one lawyer is not a practice of one person. Matters regularly require a valuation that will withstand an examiner, an accountant who already knows the family’s returns, a corporate trustee willing to serve for decades, a surveyor, an actuary, or counsel admitted in another state. This firm keeps working relationships with all of them, and a client is told plainly who is being brought in, why, and what it adds to the cost.

Nothing is referred out quietly. Where another lawyer is engaged as co-counsel, the engagement is papered and this firm remains answerable for the file. Where a matter belongs somewhere else altogether, we say so at the first meeting, and we name the firm we would send our own family to.

The network runs in both directions. A good deal of the work here arrives on the recommendation of accountants, private bankers, trust officers and other lawyers. For a practice of this kind, that is the only form of advertising that ought to be necessary.

Contact

The first conversation costs nothing.

An hour, without charge, at the principal office in Fort Lauderdale or by video. You will leave it knowing what your matter involves, roughly what it will cost, and whether it requires a lawyer at all, an answer we are willing to give honestly, because a practice this size does not need every file that is offered to it.

Tell us only as much as you are comfortable putting in writing, and we will telephone you to arrange the rest. Meetings are taken at the principal office or, by appointment, at the rooms in Miami, Coral Gables, Boca Raton and Sunrise. The files, the post and the trust account are kept in Fort Lauderdale.
